Your menstrual cycle can provide important clues about your overall health. While an occasional change in the timing of your period may not always be a cause for concern, persistent changes in your cycle or unusual bleeding should not be ignored.
One factor that is sometimes overlooked is iron deficiency.
Dr. Anita Gupta, Additional Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Fortis La Femme, recently shared her expert insights with NDTV Health on the possible connection between iron deficiency and menstrual irregularities.
Can Iron Deficiency Delay Your Period?
Severe or prolonged iron deficiency may contribute to changes in the menstrual cycle, including delayed or missed periods. However, a late period does not necessarily mean that you have an iron deficiency.
Menstrual irregularities can have many possible causes, including stress, changes in weight, excessive exercise, thyroid disorders, PCOS, illness and pregnancy.
A menstrual cycle generally ranges between 21 and 35 days when it follows a fairly regular pattern for an individual. If your period is repeatedly delayed, unusually light or heavy, or absent for several months, it is important to discuss the changes with a gynaecologist.
Why Is Iron Important for Menstrual Health?
Iron plays an important role in the production of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout the body. When iron levels become significantly low, iron-deficiency anaemia can develop.
According to Dr. Gupta, inadequate iron levels may affect the hormonal processes involved in reproductive health and can potentially influence ovulation and menstrual regularity.
Iron deficiency may therefore be associated with:
- Delayed periods
- Missed periods
- Lighter or irregular bleeding
- Changes in ovulation
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding in some cases
Heavy Periods and Iron Deficiency: A Possible Cycle
There can also be a connection between heavy menstrual bleeding and low iron levels.
Women who experience consistently heavy or prolonged periods may lose significant amounts of iron over time. If these iron stores are not adequately replenished, iron deficiency or anaemia can develop.
This is why unusually heavy periods should not simply be accepted as “normal,” particularly when they occur repeatedly.
Signs That May Suggest Iron Deficiency
A delayed period alone does not indicate iron deficiency. Other possible symptoms may include:
- Persistent tiredness or weakness
- Pale skin
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Headaches
- Breathlessness, particularly during exertion
- Difficulty concentrating
- Brittle nails
- Increased hair fall
Some women may have low iron stores before developing noticeable anaemia, so symptoms can sometimes be subtle.
When Should You See a Gynaecologist?
A period that is a few days late is usually not a reason to panic. However, medical advice is recommended if your periods are:
- Repeatedly irregular
- More than 7–10 days late
- Unusually heavy or unusually light
- Absent for several months
- Associated with other concerning symptoms
A gynaecologist can evaluate your symptoms and medical history and, when appropriate, recommend investigations for conditions such as iron deficiency or anaemia.
